The issue with sleep apnea is that it robs you of a good night’s sleep, causing your immune system to suffer. It opens the door for a number of health issues including general fatigue and body aches.

Sleep apnea can be treated. The biggest problem today with the disease is that it is horribly under-diagnosed. Dentist Avi Weisfogel Strives to Help Patients with Sleep Disorders

The 21st century has seen significant strides and breakthroughs in the medical field. As knowledge and capability grows in the medical community, more cures, treatments, and feasible procedures are coming to light for a wide range of conditions. Although some of these advancements are the result of focused work, some have emerged through innovation. One such triumph is the combination of dentistry and sleep disorder treatment. Dr. Avi Weisfogel combined his experience in the field of dentistry with his knowledge and research surrounding sleep disorders to develop treatments for sleep apnea, a condition that had previously received only moderate attention from the medical community.

Dr. Weisfogel’s Medical Advancements

Many people suffer from sleep apnea. It is a potentially serious medical condition that goes undiagnosed in a majority of those who suffer from the disorder. While asleep, a person experiences several pauses in breathing that can last for seconds or minutes. This can result in the brain, as well as the rest of the body, receiving a limited supply of oxygen. The disorder often leads to disrupted sleep, resulting in sleep deprivation for those who suffer from the disorder. Some symptoms of sleep deprivation are dull skin, headaches, moodiness, inability to focus, hair loss, and dark circles under the eyes. If left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, and in the worst circumstances, can be a contributing factor to heart failure.

Dentist Avi Weisfogel has made it possible for people suffering from sleep apnea to seek help from a dentist rather than a physician. The doctor came up with some tools and treatments to aid patients with the sleep disorder.

An established sleep specialist, Dr. Avi has founded programs designed to provide patients with oral application therapy, the most recent being Dental Sleep Masters. With this new program, patients are given personalized devices to wear during sleep. These devices help clear the airway and prevent any obstructed breathing during sleep.

Another prescription involves an oral application to support a victim’s jaw, a procedure that will, in turn, open the upper airways. Dr. Weisfogel’s program has also aided people dealing with tongue flaps or tonsils. The two infections could also obstruct airflow during breathing.

Sleep apnea is a problem that affects over 18 million adults in the U.S. alone. Not only does it inhibit sleep, but it can contribute to other chronic problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. Despite the prevalence of this chronic condition, advancements in the field of sleep apnea have been few and far between. Many aspects of the condition remain a mystery to the medical science community, but a growing number of doctors are working toward critical advancements in the field of sleep disorders. One such doctor is Avi Weisfogel, a New Jersey-based dentist and sleep apnea researcher.

Dr. Weisfogel is the founder and owner of Dental Sleep Masters, an organization dedicated to educating other oral care professionals on how they can test for, identify, and treat sleep disorders in their own patients. The techniques are gleaned from Dr. Weisfogel’s own history of successfully working with sleep apnea patients. Dr. Weisfogel has been treating sleep disorders as part of his general practice for nearly two decades, and he has helped hundreds of patients to experience improvement and relief from their sleep disorder symptoms.

Dr. Weisfogel holds degrees from Rutgers University and the New York University College of Dentistry, and his success with treating sleep disorders can be attributed to his unique combination of disciplines, having studied medicine, dentistry and psychology. Though he still uses the skills he’s been employing as a dentist since 1999, Dr. Weisfogel now focuses his energies on sleep disorders, developing new techniques that are effective for sleep apnea sufferers.

Dr. Weisfogel is passionate about researching and remedying sleep disorders because he understands their prevalence and seriousness. He found sleep apnea to be a persistent problem among patients in his own New Jersey dental practice, and he witnessed firsthand the impact that the condition had on these patients’ quality of life. In addition to endangering the cardiovascular system, the condition can lead to persistent exhaustion and even severe depression. As a dentist, Dr. Weisfogel considered how his own skills could be used to help patients with sleep disorders, and so he developed a method of oral application therapy that has proven highly effective with many sleep apnea sufferers.

Rather than just relying on the traditional CPAP machines to provide temporary relief with no long-term solutions, Dr. Weisfogel’s oral application therapy uses innovative methods to correct certain anatomical irregularities. Since sleep apnea results from airway obstruction, the problem can often be remedied by treatments like adjusting the tonsils or tongue flaps. Each patient is different, and so Dr. Weisfogel has developed a series of tests to help medical professionals pinpoint effective treatments for each case.

Dr. Avi Weisfogel is active on the lecture circuit where he advises other dentistry professionals on the relationship between oral care and sleep apnea and shares his own successes and methods for helping people achieve relief.
